The Hyundai Kona has just arrived on the market and already it is making waves and getting noticed. As Hyundai’s entry-level SUV, the Kona joins the Tucson and Santa Fe in one of the most modern and up-to-date utility vehicle lineups in the industry.
Available in seven versions, Kona is able to meet a variety of needs. The entry-level model also offers a long list of standard equipment despite its more than reasonable starting price. Let's take a closer look.
Two engines for the 2019 Hyundai Kona
The 2019 Hyundai Kona stands out in many different ways, but it's under the hood that we notice the first thing that allows the Kona to distance from its competition. Indeed, the new Kona is the only sub-compact SUV to offer two engines instead of one. Better yet, an all-electric EV version will soon be introduced. More on that in a section.
The first engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a six-speed automatic, the Kona offers more power than the majority of rivals even with its base engine while also being more fuel-efficient than most urban SUVs.
You can also adjust the way the Kona drives using a variety of driving modes, another rare feature in this segment. These modes include Eco, Sport, and Comfort, and as their name implies they adjust various parameters of the Kona’s steering, transmission and engine to improve either fuel economy or comfort, or to make it sportier.
The other option available in the Kona family is a 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder engine producing 175 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. Imagine, a 175-horsepower turbo engine in such a small vehicle.
The final result is striking and impressive as the Kona’s turbo engine delivers impressive accelerations for an SUV while also being responsive and smooth in any situation. In addition, this engine is paired with a seven-speed automatic dual clutch that ensures performance worthy of a sports car.
In terms of interior space, you get 544 liters of standard cargo space in the trunk with the rear seats lowered, and almost 1,300 liters available with all seats in place.
An EV Kona coming soon
The Hyundai Kona will also be the first sub-compact SUV to offer a 100% electric version. Expected later this year, the latter will offer a very impressive range of nearly 400 kilometers, more than a Chevrolet Bolt or even an entry-level Tesla Model X.
